On the 17th, it was announced that a new app was developed that translates Korean to English (and vice versa) that surpasses Google’s current translation services.
Korean Tourism Organization announced that Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) had finished developing an app named ‘Genie Talk’ that they have been working for the past 4 years. ETRI held a conference celebrating its launch and will be providing this service for free.
Genie Talk recognizes 270,000 Korean words and 65,000 English words that are used mostly in everyday life or in the tourism sector. The translation is near perfect, and is without many flaws. Genie Talk also provides voice services, both male and female, and shows other possible translations.
ETRI said that it surpasses Google’s service that is currently considered the best in the world as of yet. Using the service, 80% of the sentences were successfully translated, given the context of travel.
ETRI will also be developing a new translating service model for the 2014 Incheon Asia Games (Japanese, Chinese). Also, for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, ETRI will be developing services that translate Korean to Spanish, French, German and Russian.
