Potential Patent Dispute Between Samsung and LG
2013년 03월 20일

A potential patent dispute could arise between LG and Samsung, who recently launched the new Galaxy S4. It was revealed that some technologies in the new handset are similar to patents belonging to LG.

The main technology in dispute is the 'eye-tracking technology' called 'Smart Video' that LG owns. It basically stops videos when the user's eyes move away from the screen. According to Korea Intellectual Property Office, LG had held the patent since August 2009.

In Samsung's Galaxy S4, the feature is called 'Smart Pause'. LG had planned to include the feature in a software upgrade for Optimus G. LG required another patent for a feature that enables a smartphone's camera to recognize the eye movements of a user and allow them to scroll images up or down.

A similar feature in the new Galaxy S4 released by Samsung is called “Smart Scroll”.

LG had said that they will be looking into which patents have been fringed upon. Samsung on the other hand insisted that the features are completely different with an entirely different mechanism. They denied any possibilities of a patent violation.

Samsung presented its latest handset, Galaxy S4 at an unveiling event in New York last week. The phone is set for release in April.
