[Update] Samsung Display Drops Injunction Against LG Display
2013년 03월 22일

Samsung Display recently dropped an injunction seeking a ban on their archenemy, LG Display.

The ban was surrounded around the OLED, or organic light-emitting diode technology.

Does this mean that the two companies are moving to settle their display technology dispute? Well, the two companies have been heavily involved in a legal tussle over display technology since July when 11 affiliates from the Samsung unit were indicted on charges of leaking core technology to LG. In September, Samsung filed an injunction seeking a ban on use of 18 confidential technologies for its OLED displays and 21 other relevant details, which later evolved into an all-out display dispute that also included technologies for liquid-crystal display.

According to the Seoul Central District Court, Samsung Display has submitted a document canceling the injunction. Whether this is a reconciliatory move or purely for strategic purposes is up for debate. There was also recently a meeting held spearheaded by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy attended by CEOs of Samsung and LG Display.

Samsung declined to provide a statement on the issue, but it will be interesting to see how this move fits with the rest of the puzzle - LG recently claimed that Samsung infringed their patent rights regarding the eye-scrolling technology that came out with the new Galaxy S4 launched last week in New York.
