음악 스트리밍 서비스 '밀크 뮤직(Milk Music)'의 자매 서비스로 작년 11월 출시된 '밀크 비디오(Milk Video)'를 제공하는 삼성전자가 올 11월 20일부로 1년 만에 밀크 비디오의 철수 계획을 밝혔다.
밀크 비디오는 짧은 엔터테인먼트 동영상을 서비스하는 무료 앱으로 게임, 코미디, 스포츠 등 다양한 장르의 영상을 제공해 왔다. 또한, 밀크 뮤직처럼 앱을 통해 개인화된 경험 즉 사용자의 미디어 소비 패턴을 분석해 사용자가 관심 있어 할 만한 영상을 추천해 주는 기능을 제공했다. 또 페이스북을 통해 로그인한 사용자의 '좋아요'를 분석해 사용자가 개인 채널을 만들 수 있도록 기능을 마련했다.
밀크 비디오를 서비스하기 위해 삼성전자는 다양한 콘텐츠 미디어 회사들과 협력해 왔다. 협력사로는 비보(Vevo), 버즈피드(Buzzfeed), 레드불(Red Bull), 퍼니 올 다이(Funny or Die), 메이커 스튜디오(Maker Studios) 등이 있다. 대부분의 동영상은 다른 온라인 미디어 채널에서 볼 수 있는 영상이지만, 밀크 비디오 앱을 통해서만 단독으로 제공되는 콘텐츠들도 있었다.
또한, 밀크 비디오 앱은 서비스 시작 초기에 삼성전자의 몇몇 스마트폰을 통해서만 다운로드 받을 수 있도록 제공됐지만 곧 삼성전자의 새로운 플래그십 스마트폰에 미리 설치된 형태로 제공되어왔다.
올해 초 삼성전자의 콘텐츠·서비스 부문 부사장 케빈 스윈트가 회사를 떠나면서 이상기류를 짐작했다고 전문가는 전했다. 스윈트는 삼성전자에 합류하기 전 애플의 아이튠스 비디오 사업을 운영했다.
삼성전자는 서비스 철수 이후에 대한 자세한 계획은 밝히지 않았지만, 지속해서 프리미엄(freemium) 엔터테인먼트 서비스를 제공할 예정이라고 회사는 전했다.
반면 타 동영상 서비스 사업자는 밀레니얼 세대를 타겟으로 활발한 사업을 펼치고 있다. 기존 훌루의 CEO 제이슨 킬라는 훌루와 비슷한 프리미엄(freemium) 모델의 모바일 비디오 서비스 베슬(Vessel)을 런칭했으며, 미국 최대 통신회사 버라이즌 역시 모바일 비디오 플랫폼 고90(Go90)을 런칭할 계획을 밝혔다.
