7일(현지 시간) 블룸버그, 디지털트렌즈 등 주요 IT외신은 구글과 왓츠앱은 인수 계약을 위한 협상에 나섰고, 10억 달러(한화 약 1조원) 인수가 임박했다고 보도했다.
소식통에 따르면 이번 협상은 4~5주 전부터 시작됐으며 왓츠앱은 인수가를 10억 달러보다 높게 받기를 원하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
외신은 구글이 자사 모바일 전략에서 가장 성과가 미흡한 메시징 분야를 보강하려는 것이라고 보도했다. 그간 구글은 구글토크, 행아웃, 보이스, 구글챗, 구글플러스 등 다양한 서비스에서 각각의 채팅 기능을 제공했지만 각 서비스별로 큰 차이점이 없어 사용자들을 분산시키는 역효과만 낳았다는 지적을 받아왔다. 구글 에릭슈미트 회장 역시 “CEO로서 10년 동안 일하면서 소셜미디어와 메신저 혁명에 늦게 진입한 것을 후회한다”고 밝힌바 있다.
외신은 구글이 최근 독자적 통합 메시징 플랫폼 ‘배블(Babble)’을 선보일 것이라고 발표했으나, 이미 글로벌 경쟁이 가속화된 메시징 시장의 우위를 점하기 위해 왓츠앱과 같이 브랜딩이 구축된 플랫폼의 활용이 필요하다고 전했다. 특히 0.99달러 유료 판매라는 실질적 수익모델이 검증됐다는 점에서 이번 인수가 이뤄진다면 구글이 확고한 메시징 서비스 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.
